Boomfeestdag wants more children to plant trees

The Dutch foundation Boomfeestdag wants the Climate summit in Paris to sign a treaty to stimulate to children plant more trees. According to the foundation, planting an own tree would add to the nature-consciousness of children. This way children could be more involved with the climate problems.

The foundation Nationale Boomfeestdag is committed to the education for children about nature. Since the start 60 years ago, Dutch school children planted already more than 11 million trees. Each year the foundation organizes one day ‘De Boomfeestdag’ on which children all over the country plant together a number of trees. In 2016 the national manifestation will be organized in Den Bosch. The theme is ‘Trees and Forests’.

Great results for anniversary edition GrootGroenPlus2015

From 30 September until 2 October, the 25th edition of trade fair GrootGroenPlus was held. Both visitors and participants were very positive about the trade fair, according to the preliminary survey results. For this anniversary edition, a special program was created, with for example a special anniversary night. Special attention was also paid to a number of participants who have participated since the start of the trade fair. Many people visited the trade fair.

Visitors and participants are positive
Like previous year, participants and visitors received questionnaires about their experience at the trade fair. This showed that visitors rated the trade fair with an 8. They thought that visiting the trade fair was interesting, educational, and useful. Participants also rated the trade fair very well, with a (preliminary) 7. A majority of the participants has also registered for the edition of 2016. The involvement with the trade fair is huge; GrootGroenPlus is regarded as a trade fair that is created by trade professionals, for trade professionals. Participants also like to participate in the continued development of the trade fair.

The quality of the visitors on Wednesday and Thursday was rated higher than in 2014. A new question was related to the hospitality at the trade fair. This aspect was rated with an 8. Participants feel that GrootGroenPlus is a relation trade fair at the start of the trading season and consider the atmosphere to be very warm. This year, the questionnaire also addressed the theme, the cooperation with other trade fairs, and the extent to which GrootGroenPlus inspires visitors and participants. These aspects also scored a 7.

19 Countries
Most of the visitors were growers/producers. This was the same as last year. The percentage of green organisations and suppliers increased a little bit. Even though the majority came from the Netherlands, there was a noticeable increase in international visitors. They came for example from Belgium, Germany, England, Ireland, France, Poland, Spain, Nigeria, Sweden, Montenegro, the United States, Slovakia, Portugal, Turkey, Norway, Romania, Czech Republic, and Austria. In general, the trade visitors – and with that, the international trade visitors – seems to increase. This shows that the market is also getting better.

Novelties
The novelty inspection has turned into a regular item at GrootGroenPlus. The judges rated a total of 23 submitted plants and selected the Chamaecyperis pisifera ‘Blue Moon’, submitted by Sierteeltkwekerij Kools, as the best novelty. The judges called it ‘a healthy, uniform blue dwarf conifer with a high level of cuddliness’. There were also two other gold medal winners, the Skimmia japonica ‘Moerings1’ (WHITE DWARF), and the Skimmia japonica ‘Moerings 2’ (RED DWARF), both submitted to Van Vliet New Plants. In total, 4 silver and 5 bronze medals were also awarded. The judges were satisfied with the quality of the novelties.

Stand inspections
Tree nursery Verpaalen-Herijgers had the best green stand and won the Jac Lodders award. According to the jury, the company succeeded in representing the theme ‘Growing Strong! Celebrating 25 years!’, which was beautifully illustrated by them. They had done this by creating a combination of plants and shrubs, but also by using a company film, and with many images of 25 years of trade fair. Stichting Beurshal won the Jan van Dongen award for the best supplier stand. The Zunderts Groen Imago Prijs was won by Roelands Boomkwekerijen BV. They succeeded best in promoting the region of Zundert, both in their publications and in their products.

Anniversary night
During the anniversary night, trend watcher Donata van der Rassel had a chance to give a speech. She expects that growers and retailers will play a completely different role in the future. In the next few years, we will be dealing with an even more critical consumer, who knows how to use the Internet. It is a consumer with an unconscious desire for green, who is also looking increasingly more at quality. Sustainability will play an important role in making decisions, and the need for good information will increase. The grower of the future will have to make clear choice, he needs a strategy. Choosing is winning! In short, Donata van der Rassel offered her audience a lot to think about. More information and images can be found at www.grootgroenplus.nl.

The European NurseryStock Association (ENA) held its summer General Assembly meeting in Helsingborg, Sweden

The Swedish organization LRF Horticulture (LRF Trädgård) hosted the meeting that was attended by delegates from 15 different countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom).

The meeting had a great focus on Plant Health with discussions driven by Mr Marc Van Hulle, chairman of the ENA EU Legislation Working Group. The General Assembly widely deliberated about Xylella fastidiosa. Delegates at ENA expressed their concerns about this disease and also stated their confidence that the European nurseries are acting properly, in accordance with the regulations and at the highest level of plant health. The General Assembly confirmed ENA is strongly in favor of the robust measures adopted by the European Commission to prevent the spread of this disease in Europe but, at the same time, is against any additional measures implemented by EU Member States preventing the free circulation of goods within the EU. It was also agreed to ask the European Commission for significant high funding that will allow 1) rapid reaction against the first detections, including compensation for owners if eradication measures must be taken and 2) start or enhance R&D projects to prevent and fight against Xylella and other quarantine pests and diseases.

The General Assembly debated about the effects of the EU Regulation on the Invasive Alien Species on plants produced and marketed by European nurseries. It was stated that the Regulation does not provide for any exceptions for varieties obtained with the purpose of creating sterile and non-invasive forms. The Regulation refers without exception to species as lower rank taxa, while there are many non-invasive varieties and cultivation forms on the market; for example, sterile varieties not producing seeds. It was agreed to offer the ENA specialists support to the European Commission’s committees on Invasive Alien Species.

Leon Smet, chairman of the ENA International Plant Names List Working Group, updated the delegates about changing names and adding new species and varieties to the list. It was decided to finish the names compilation work by the end of summer to have time during autumn to review it, with the aim of publishing the new International Plant Names List in early 2016 (www.internationalplantnames.com).

All ENA delegates shared information about the trends on plant production and internal and export markets of nurseries in each country, summarized in a table that ENA President Mr Tim Edwards proposed to update twice a year.

The summer meeting finished visiting Splendor Plant (www.spelndorplant.se), one of Sweden’s largest nurseries, and Tönnersjö Nursery (www.tonnersjo.se), one of Sweden’s largest tree producers, guided by Patrick Svensson, the Swedish nurseryman and Vice-President of ENA.

The silver variegated leaves appear quite stable and the plant offers outstanding presentation. With regard to Coreopsis ‘KA-POW Golden Yellow’ by Moerheim New Plant/Meilland Nederland from Leimuiderbrug, the jury had the following to say: “Outstandingly well-presented plants; striking large flowers in a fresh, attractive colour”. The jury felt that Geranium pratense ‘Midnightlyona’ (MIDNIGHT GHOST) by Compass Plants BV from Hillegom was innovative as a result of the combination of dark leaves and almost white flowers, sturdy stems and good cultivation performance which allows the plants to be displayed in bloom in August. With regard to Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Dancing Snow’ (DOPPIO BIANCO) by Kwekerij Lendert de Vos BV from Reeuwijk, the jury said the following: a highly innovative combination of flower colour and shape. The jury felt that Hydrangea paniculata ‘PIIHPI’ (BABY LACE) by Boomkwekerij Alex Schoemaker/Plantipp BV from Boskoop/IJsselstein consists of attractive, robust and compact plants which are innovative in combination with the flower shape. In the opinion of the jury, Nandina domestica ‘Twilight’ by About Plants Zundert BV/Plantipp BV from Zundert/IJsselstein consists of highly uniform and well-presented plants, with the variegated leaves forming an innovation in the Nandina range. The jury felt that Photinia serratifolia ‘Oploo5’ (PINK CRISPY) by Van Oploo Tuinplanten/Plantipp BV from Bavel/IJsselstein stands out as a result of the attractive combination of leaf colours (young and fully grown) and stem colour.

The jury also awarded 15 silver medals and 11 bronze medals.

106 plants judged
The new plants were judged by an expert judging committee from the Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society. In the 33rd edition of Plantarium, 127 plants were entered for the new plant awards. In the end, a total of 106 were judged. Unfortunately, various entrants were forced to withdraw their plants before the awards took place due to unforeseen circumstances.
Plantarium runs from 26 to 29 August 2015 in the Plantarium building at the International Trade Centre Boskoop-Hazerswoude. For further information, please visit www.plantarium.nl.

Fourth edition TCO EXPO shows trees and technique at a unique location

The trade fair for growers of standard trees, TCO EXPO, will organise its fourth edition this year, on 24 and 25 June. This time, a unique location has been selected. The trade fair will be held in the buildings and on the terrain of three growers near each other on the Tielsestraat in Opheusden. Over 60 participants, among them well-known growers and suppliers, show their products and innovations in the field of growing and technique. The theme is Together in Nature.

TCO EXPO is very interesting for the entire chain of growers, wholesale, importers and exporters, landscapers, landscape architects, and also those in government positions responsible for (the purchase of) plants and maintenance. Besides the shown products and services, the trade fair also offers demonstrations and symposia, which provide additional added value.

Tree tour
A visit to the trade fair also offers a great opportunity to visit the companies in the area. A number of the companies in the area have indicated that they want to open their doors to national and international visitors. It is possible to visit these companies on one’s own, but it is also possible to ask the organisation of the tree fair about the Tree Tour.

Opening
On 24 June, TCO EXPO will be officially opened by Henk Westerhof, chairman of the trade organisation Anthos, and during the program, the winning novelties of the ‘green’ participants and in the Technique category (this winner will receive the Rabobank award) will also be put in the spotlight.

Demonstrations and symposia
During both days, regular demonstrations will be offered, which are directly related to the standard tree. Both days will also include interesting symposia. On 24 June, the subject is native material. One of the questions that might be answered is how as a company, you can play into these new laws in Germany. Is it a threat because it closes off markets, or does it offer an opportunity? And what is the impact on the organisation of the company? On 25 June, the subject ‘Together in Nature’, which is the theme of the trade fair, plays a central role. This symposium is all about ‘Trees on their own roots’. How will this type of cultivation develop itself in the future?

Leading area on standard trees
The area Opheusden is an extensive area with standard trees, with a lot of growers and a broad assortment when it comes to this type of growth. The multiple grower associations in this area have joined forces in one new association, Tree Centre Opheusden (TCO). Indeed, that is why ‘Together in Nature’ is this year’s theme. TCO Expo will now also be sponsored by this association. For and by growers is still the starting point, and this guarantees a close connection with the trade. The new association does not only aim at guarding the interests of the members, but also the area as a whole, and to promote it both nationally and internationally as a leading area when it comes to standard trees.

GrootGroenPlus 2015: meet, learn, and inspire

The anniversary edition of trade fair GrootGroenPlus, which will be held in Zundert from 30 September to 2 October, is centred around meeting, learning, and inspiring. It will be a very festive edition, with the theme ‘Growing Strong, Celebrating 25 Years’. Participants – and visitors – are in for an attractive and broad offer. In short: GrootGroenPlus 2015 will be a 3-day ‘one-stop-shopping’ event for everyone who is professionally involved with green.

From seed to avenue tree
The even broader assortment is one of the main characteristics of the 25th edition of trade fair GrootGroenPlus. From seed to avenue tree; you can find everything at the trade fair. Some participants present growing materials, seedlings, bare root plants, and container grown plants, while others present new products. Some participants sell plants as a concept, others in special shapes or applications, or even as a pure product. It is a diverse, high-quality offer for visitors, both for creation and maintenance and for garden centres.

Set-up
This year, there will be once again three different routes. Combined, these 3 routes have a length of 1 kilometre. Both the red and the grey route – which have a height of 11 meters – offer room for many park and avenue trees.

The grey route features a large square of 140 square meters, with nine growers from the Haaren area, who present – among other things – shrubs, ornamental grasses, bush roses, taxus, solitaries, root ball trees, heavy hedge plants, buxus, Ilex, 150 different avenue and park trees, and a total offer for gardeners and export.

Alongside the blue route, visitors find the collective of Treeport. They represent the interests of tree nurseries in the Zundert area, which is known for its 400 plant species, trade, and good logistics. In the heart of this collective, one can find the stand of Business Centre Treeport, surrounded by businesses that will establish themselves there. The blue route will be filled with – among other things – a stand of several metres long, set up by parties that are represented by Flora Holland and the participants’ group from the Venlo area, who for example present ground covering shrubs, buxus, taxus, Prunus laurocerasus, conifers, and multiple container plants.

Much to see, much to do
The international participants are, just like the technique participants, distributed over the three routes. The grey route features the most Belgian participants. Other international participants are for example from France, Germany, Morocco, Italy, Poland, and England.

Materials such as wired gate products, soil improvers, food, (cultivation) advice, biological novelties such as pots and glue, old fruit trees, green for roofs and façades, plugs, mandrels, and water plants will be presented to the trade public as well. Besides that, the tree nursery areas Opheusden, known for its avenue trees, and Boskoop, known for its total production of garden plants, are also well represented at GrootGroenPlus 2015.

Novelties
Starting from the entrance, a lot of attention is paid to creating an experience. Besides the Treeport Garden with example applications of the plants that can be purchased, every corner also offers something new. And of course, the novelties will be inspected by the KVBC and presented on the trade floor as well this year. Also, nine novelties from the past will return and the visitors will be presented with an overview of 25 years of novelties.

During a visit to GrootGroenPlus, it is not just about looking, discovering, and researching, but also about networking. A trade fair like this offers professionals from public green, garden centres, architects, gardeners, garden contractors, and other interested parties a perfect platform to meet, to maintain relationships, and to form new bonds. This can be done at the trade fair, but also during the opening, at the discussion tables, or during the anniversary evening.

Participation and visit
This year, the waiting list for the participants had to be activated precisely two months earlier than in 2014. Companies can still register for participation, however, a spot cannot be guaranteed at this point. At the moment, there are over 250 participants who were in time to ensure their spot at the trade fair. Mid-June, participants will receive their relation cards to invite visitors. Visitors who did not get a relation card can preregister their visit as of 1 June via www.grootgroenplus.nl.

It is also possible to start informing oneself and be inspired through the digital participant catalogue, which is available through www.grootgroenplus.nl. This catalogue also shows who will be there at the trade fair, and what they will present to the public.
